Do you get enough sleep? If you ever get drowsy while driving or nod off watching tv, you might be a victim of sleep deprivation. Sleep deprivation is a condition where a person doesn't get enough sleep and it can effect every aspect of their lives.

Why do we need sleep? The exact function of sleeping is still not known. But we all need sleep. When we do not get enough sleep, it can effect you mentally, emotionally and physically. We feel tired, fatigued, grumpy, cross, drowsy, confused. Falling asleep at the wheel while driving is a major cause of accidents. We make more mistakes at work, there is a decrease in creativity, and our brains are slower in processing information. Studies are now showing that sleep deprivation can depress the immune system and lead to physical health problems.

Most people sleep an average of 7-8 hours per night. Some people need or think they need as little as 4 hours per night, but some need as much as 10-12 hours per night. Still, people who believe they need little sleep suffer from some level of sleep deprivation eventually.

What can we do to avoid sleep deprivation? We can decrease our caffiene and nicotine intake. Exercise regualarly. Go to bed a little earlier and the same time each night. Do something calming before bed, such as reading or bathing. Having sex before bed can also have the same effect.
