When setting up an office at home, there are many things to consider, including supplies, workspace, and equipment.

Communication: When setting up your home office, consider where the telephone line is in the room. By setting up the computer and telephone near an existing line, you will save the expense of having the line re-run. When deciding upon your Internet provider and telephone service package, be sure to consider your faxing needs as well as voice mail. There are on-line faxing services that allow you to send and receive faxes over the Internet. Many local phone companies provide a voice mail service that will answer if you are using the telephone. If yours does not provide this service, you may want to consider an extra telephone line.

Computer: You will want to invest in a computer with enough memory and hard drive space for your work needs. Consider a large, flat-screen monitor if you will be working much at the computer. On-line, you can configure your own computer at www.dell.com. There are also numerous stores, such as Best Buy, that sell complete systems and can answer any of your questions.

Storage: Buy a desk with plenty of drawer space for your home office. Optimally, purchase a computer desk, also. This will allow you to set up a larger work area. File cabinets and bookcases also help to reduce clutter when you work.

Chair: Invest in a quality chair with arms and back support. Consider some of the ergonomically correct options. The investment will be worth it in productivity and comfort.

Supplies: On-line, you can purchase supplies and have them delivered straight to your home. It is more convenient and often less expensive than buying at an office supply store. Check out www.office.com or www.staples.com.

Finally, when configuring your home office, imagine yourself working in it. Arrange the furniture conveniently. For example, if you will often use the file cabinet, consider facing the drawers toward your desk and easily reachable. Have both your desk and computer station within swivel-distance and the telephone easily reachable. Remember to include a guest chair if you will have clients visiting.

Once your office is complete, it is time to get to work and prosper!
